Recipe – Homemade Natural Deodorant
About a year ago, I started becoming more aware of how toxic so many every day items are for us. (I’ve actually always been aware, but it was at this point I now had the brain capacity after having kids, to finally do some proper research and make some changes!)
One of the first things I decided to change in an effort to detox my life, was my deodorant. Filled with aluminium and a wealth of other cancer causing and endocrine disrupting chemicals, this had to go.
Obviously no one wants to smell bad so it had to work right? I instantly bought one online which was a natural alternative…it worked for a few days, but then didn’t always do the trick.
Not wanting to give up, I researched and tested a few ways of making my own and I’ve never looked back. I love it! It’s quick and easy to make, smells good and keeps me smelling good! It is made of totally edible natural organic ingredients! (Not that I’d choose to, or recommend eating it of course!)
Who could ask for more?! Check out the recipe below and give it a try, let me know what you think? Definitely a life changer for me!
1/2 cup coconut oil
1/4 cup bicarb
1/4 cup corn flour
Few drops of your favourite essential oil, I use lemon or lavender.
The bicarb helps eliminate odours and the cornflour helps soak up moisture. This won’t prevent you sweating, as that is what our bodies are designed to do!
Mash all together until well combined into a thick paste consistency, then add the essential oil. Transfer to a glass container. Due to the nature of coconut oil, it does solidify in cold weather so I tend to use a fork to break it up into small lumps so it’s easier to apply (it melts on contact with your skin). The reverse of this is true in the summer where it can turn into a liquid! Simply put a little on your fingers and rub into your armpits to stay fresh all day. Allow to soak in to your skin before putting clothing on to avoid any greasy marks.
Go ahead, give it a try! If you find this recipe doesn’t work for you, please do try others before returning to the shop bought variety. I tried several before I found this recipe, it works for me, but every body is different 😀
